The Broken One
We are still enjoying the remains of our summer. Blue skies, breezy weather, shining sun with it’s rays lighting up the sand and keeping warm our skin. Everything looks lovely. The tides from last week brought in a whole array of shells!!! Different sizes, shapes and bold colors. They are each unique. There are even some broken ones washed up from the shore. If you go far enough you’ll pull up some of the most amazing shells! We can make a collection of them for display.
She scoops down to get a different shell after shell that catches the eyes. Water is about ankle deep and not strong at all. Just enough to push the shells a bit so they glisten under the shallow water. This one stands out… It is white and blue… Perfectly striped all the way to the end but it’s broken!!! She tosses it back in the water. Oddly enough she feels an inner conviction and thought, “God wouldn’t throw me away if I was broken!” So she stoops back down digging into the water and sand for that broken one! Oh how lovely! She showed it to me and told me the story. I said, “but with all the shells you have here this broken one is the most beautiful one of them all! Look!” I tilt it a bit so you see the broken side and its that cobalt blue that some other steady beach goers had mentioned. The part where it was broke had a beautiful blue color and not like the others.
She agreed and gave it to me saying, “Here, take it!” I said, “That one is yours, I can’t take that!” We were like two little girls debating over the best seashells!!! And laughing out loud! She said, “Stop just take it, I got that one for you!”
It is already in my vase at home with many others. The first person I showed all my seashells to said, that broken one is real pretty!
You see! That is how we are! We may think we are useless, no good, of no value, cast off, forgotten, neglected, emptied, deserted, alone, shameful, indifferent and the like… Yet God sees us as beautiful! When we think there is nothing else left we could do with ourselves… God sees there is more! So much more!
“In that while we were still sinners, Christ died for the ungodly.”
Romans 5:6
He will never throw us away. He will never think there is nothing left of us. He will never forget about us. He will never think that we are useless because of something that happened to us which caused us to be broken. In fact, it is quite the opposite, where He takes the broken ones and He makes them the most beautiful ones. The ones that have the best testimonies, the best smiles, the best stories, and the best victories come out of their brokenness.
You may feel broken, you may look broken, you may act broken but when it comes to God the broken one is the most beautiful one… He will never cast you off.
“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; For you will forget the shame of your youth, And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.”
Isaiah 54:4
You know even the worst people in the Bible were protected by God and He used them in powerful ways. If you look at Cain after he had killed his brother Abel God protected him because he still saw him as a valuable life despite what he did wrong [Genesis 4].
Apostle Paul consented in the deaths of many but God consented in the life of Paul and used him in a powerful way to uphold many churches and bring the gospel to the gentiles [Acts 9]. Even King David made a mess of things and God kept him all throughout his days. He even wrote, “I am feeble and severely broken; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart [Psalms 38:8 ].”
So no matter how broken you make feel or look, to God you are His choice! And it is time for Him to put you on display… He is collecting all the broken pieces of your life. All the shattered moments. All the things that hurt you the most in your process, so that He can shine His glory through your broken story. As we reflect of the lives of others through the Word of God, there will be moments where you will see His work in your life, even through the absolute worst events.
It is okay to be the broken one, we all have been there. And we shall see the beauty of it all in God’s timetable.
Amen…

Sometimes I feel broken. After reading this, I don’t think I will ever think of myself that way again.
