Selected & Singled

imageWhat an amazing story in the bible of how King David was selected and singled out among all his family to be the leader of Jerusalem. The part that is worth recognizing, is that no one in the natural would choose this youngster feeding sheep! NO ONE–not even the prophet.

This was simply God orchestrating the moment to select his chosen vessel for the kingdom—the youngest one of all. And for you my friend, God can select you too. Just like that. He will take you, anoint you, build you and put you on display.

God is always the one in the selection business, not in the way that man would be. For in the eyes of man, we will never be the value that we are to God.

This is a serious story. It is intimate. It is on the life of a loner. The life of the one that is on the back end of things. The one that is last. The one that is young or too old. The one that is inexperienced. The one that messed up. The one that doesn’t have much going on. The one that has been through the mud. Yes if that is you–then you will be the precise one that God will select THEN single out.

You see people are looking for the most qualified to take on a position. They are looking for credentials. They are looking for the degree, certificates, trophies and star badges that you have received. Yet God is looking for NONE of that…For He is simply looking for the one that will lead the people back to Him. He is looking for the one that will worship Him in spirit and in truth. He is looking for the one that will inquire of Him. He is looking for the one that will be obedient and say YES to God –even when it doesn’t make sense!!!

In 1 Samuel 16:1-13, we read the story of how young David was selected among 7 others. Even in that he was the outlier. For seven is the number of great significance. It represents divine perfection, totality or completion. So in this divine perfection of God, He takes the outlier and makes His presence known! He provides calling and direction to that one that was not a part of that totality. You would think God is doing things out of order. Even Samuel questioned himself, God and the father of the boys… He said, “ARE YOU SURE, that all the men are here!” For to Samuel and Jesse the father, this looked like a great batch of men that could be the next in line for King over Jerusalem…God said, “NOPE–this is not the one!”

Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one! Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
1 Samuel 16:5-13 NKJV

After Samuel passed through all 7 men, God revealed the last. He made the last first. He made the worst best. He made the runt arise. And he did it in the presence of the rest. That they would recognize and see. God saying…the one they have left out, I have remembered. The one that you ignored, is the one that I was watching. The one that you put to shame, is the one that I have honored. The one that you have disapproved of, is the one that I have approved. The one that you refuse is the one that I will use!

And to God be the Glory! For indeed He has used the life of many that have fit into the category. The ones with backgrounds similar to this. Samuel was not a bad person. Samuel just needed to see through the eyes of God and not by what he saw as fit. And this is what we need to do at all times. We need to ask God to allow us to see what HE sees. To give us sight for those that have been neglected. To give us a heart for those that are in need. Usually these are the worst types of individuals. But in this God shows us, watch how I take this person from GLORY to GLORY… if I did it with you, “Samuel the boy” what makes you think I cannot do it with others. I will take that BOY and make him a MAN of God. I will make him a King. I will make him a man of valor and integrity and this you will see by the heart…and not by any other outward appearance.

God will bring that one that was out in the back end of life into the front line of leadership. He does what is best, what is choice and what will get the job done for real. It takes a pure heart to lead a nation back to the heart of God and that is what King David did when he reigned in Jerusalem. That is what brought God glory…everything else never interrupted the ultimate plan of God.

God selected David and then singled him out in front of everyone. The glory will come out of the ones with the worst kind of story. That is what salvation is all about. That is the heart of God. That is the will of God. That is the plan that God has for us.
